An allotment update…
I’ve been really disheartened recently over the weeds and grass on my plot. The soil was too wet to dig the weeds out, and then, almost overnight, it was too dry to the point I could barely get a fork in it.
I walked up the other morning to water what little I have growing there at the moment and stood to take it in, looking around at all the work that needs to be done. But then I looked around at the plots around me and they’re mostly all the same. They have grass as tall as mine. Some don’t have much growing either.
I’ve decided not to fight it this year. It’s been a strange growing season already, so instead of whacking everything down with a strimmer and watching it grow back again before I can dig it over, I’m going to leave it. I’ll cover it over, bit by bit, and work with what I have.
I’ll be collecting cardboard, lots of it! And laying it down to cover as much of the ground as I can and eventually covering the cardboard with compost to turn everything into no dig beds.
I’m choosing not to be overwhelmed and influenced by what I see on growing pages and YouTube.
“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”
But most importantly? Stay wild!
